When people phone us about excavator hire, the first question we always ask is: what are you actually trying to do? Because the honest answer is that for some jobs, a mini excavator is exactly right — and for others, you’d be better off with a different piece of kit entirely.
Here’s a straightforward guide to the situations where a mini excavator earns its hire cost, and a few where it doesn’t.
What Is a Mini Excavator?
A mini excavator — sometimes called a micro digger or compact excavator — is a smaller version of the tracked excavators you’d see on major construction sites. ‘Mini’ usually means anything from around 1 tonne up to about 5 tonnes. The smaller end of that range is sometimes called a micro digger.
The key advantage over a full-size machine is access. A 1-tonne micro digger can fit through a standard garden gate, and our 2-tonne Takeuchi excavators are ideal for all but the most restricted sites. That means you can bring serious digging capability to jobs where a full-size machine simply can’t go.
What Jobs Are Mini Excavators Right For?
In our experience at Olympus, the jobs where customers get the most value from a mini excavator are:
- Garden landscaping and levelling — if you’re regrading a slope, creating a level lawn, or shifting a significant quantity of soil, doing it by hand is slow and exhausting. A mini excavator transforms a weekend into a morning
- Drainage installation — laying French drains, soakaways, or extending drainage runs means digging trenches to a specific depth and width. A mini excavator does this precisely and quickly, and causes far less disruption than hand digging
- Pond or water feature creation — digging a garden pond to a proper depth with consistent sides is genuinely difficult by hand. A compact excavator gives you control and speed
- Foundation digging for small structures — garden rooms, outbuildings, garages and extensions all need foundations. Even a small extension requires significant excavation, and the right machine makes this far safer and more accurate
- Tree stump removal — paired with a suitable attachment, a mini excavator makes light work of stumps that would take hours to extract otherwise
- Footpath and driveway preparation — removing old material and preparing the sub-base for a new driveway or path is a classic use case
Which Size Do You Need?
We have several mini excavator sizes available from our Newton Abbot depot:
- Micro digger (around 1 tonne) — can pass through garden gates, ideal for restricted-access jobs and light excavation. With retractable tracks, it can navigate narrow passages with ease
- 2-tonne excavator — our most popular size for domestic projects. Enough power for most garden and groundwork jobs, still manoeuvrable on domestic sites. Prices from around £110 per day excl. VAT
- Larger excavators — for bigger groundwork projects, we have access to additional sizes through our cross-hire network, so we can usually source what you need
If you’re not sure which size suits your project, call us. Our team will ask the right questions and point you in the right direction — we’d rather you have the right machine than hire something that doesn’t quite do the job.
Do You Need a Licence to Operate a Mini Excavator?
For private use on your own land, there’s no legal requirement for a formal licence to operate a mini excavator in the UK. That said, these are serious pieces of machinery and should always be operated with care. When you hire from us, we provide full operating instructions and a safety briefing for every machine — and we’re always happy to answer questions about technique or operation before you head off site.
For commercial or site use, CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) or NPORS certification is typically expected by principal contractors. If this is relevant to your hire, just mention it when you call and we can advise.
